Emery Unified School District is accepting applications for the following:

Position Title:           Physical Education Teacher

 

Description:              Under the direction of the School Principal, the Physical Education Teacher develops and implements an instructional program that will provide the best possible health and physical education experiences for each student at Emery Secondary School.  The P.E. Teacher serves the students at Emery Secondary School across the spectrum of P.E., using teaching methods and best practices that inspire and engage student learning across all abilities and multiple intelligences.  Additionally, the teacher will develop and implement a well-articulated 7-12 P.E. program that addresses the California State Standards. 

 

Qualifications:          Valid California credential in Physical Education

                                             Verification of a PASSING CBEST and a CPR certificate

• Professional/personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with athletes, coaches,   school    personnel and the community

• Good health and no disqualifying physical or emotional handicaps. Evidence of fitness to teach   from the standpoint of health may be required from a qualified physician

Fingerprint and tuberculosis clearances as required by law

Work Year:                10 months, 184 days, 6.5 hours per day

 

Annual Salary:          Placement on Certificated salary schedule based upon education and experience.

Major Responsibilities

The P. E. Teacher responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following.  Other related duties may be assigned. 

  • Plan and instruct P.E. classes to comply with the goals and objectives of the District, the School and the Academic Departments. 
  • Provide a balanced instruction program.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans and activities consistent with California State Standards.
  • Develop lessons and lesson plans making use of instructional materials and, insofar as possible, provide individual and small group instruction in adopting the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. 
  • Develop an interesting, motivational P.E. curriculum that encourages students to participate and develop skills in P.E.
  • Evaluate pupil academic and social growth, prepare progress reports, and communicate with parents. 
  • Communicate with parents through a variety of means.   Hold parent conferences when needed to discuss the individual pupil progress and interpret the school program.
  • Create an effective learning environment.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Establish a culture of high expectations that includes college preparation for all students.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. 
  • Work with the District and Site Administrators, and staff on physical education issues and participate on the Health and Wellness Committee
  • Ensure that teachers and principals are familiar with changes to California State Standards curriculum in health, physical education and family life education
  • Provide leadership in curriculum development and family life education planning as well as the formation of goals and objectives in health and physical education
  • Assist in the acquisition of, instructional materials, teacher guides, health and physical education equipment
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the District and/ or self-selected professional growth activities.

Knowledge of:          Secondary School Physical Education curriculum, procedures, methods and strategies; California State standards; curriculum and instruction; safety procedures; effective discipline and campus supervision and control methods; program and activity evaluation strategies and procedures; Education Code, local policies, and State and Federal laws relating to minors; current educational theories and practices.  The utilization of hands-on, teaching methods inspiring and managing students in an urban school environment.  ‘Modeling Approach” to teaching or a willingness to participate in training to acquire such. 

 

Ability to:                   Communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing; establish and maintain positive working relationships; demonstrate outstanding leadership; be flexible; analyze and define problems and issues, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions to develop appropriate solutions; understand and carry out directions with minimal accountability controls; manage multiple tasks; interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables; Share common practices and approaches to teaching and learning with peer teachers; Work as a “Small Learning Community (SLC)” team member across curriculum; Identify unique student needs and collaborates with other team members to address learning challenges, and identify how best o help students whether academically or behaviorally.  Teach other subjects and/or elective courses; Mentor students as an advisory teacher.  This position requires above average locomotion, strong communication skills and the ability to perceive the environment.
