EMERY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (EUSD) STUDENT ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY FOR COMPUTER AND INTERNET USE

EUSD’s computer network provides access to the Internet, an electronic information “highway” connecting millions of computers and people all over the world. Students may access:

1. electronic mail (email) communication with people all over the world;
2. information and news from a wide variety of sources and research institutions;
3. discussion groups on a wide variety of topics;
4. access to many university libraries, the Library of Congress, and more

The Internet also contains material which is not appropriate for a school. This policy describes our expectations for each Internet user. If a user violates any of these provisions, his/her access privileges may be terminated, appropriate disciplinary action taken, and all future access denied.

• ACCEPTABLE USE: The use of an account must be in support of the educational objectives of EUSD. Transmission of any materials in violation of any U.S. or state laws is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to copyrighted or threatening material. Do not use, access, visit, download, or transmit inappropriate material, messages or images such as pornography, profanity or obscenity.
• PRIVILEGES: The use of EUSD network services is a PRIVILEGE, not a right, and inappropriate use may result in a cancellation of those privileges. The system administrator will deem what is inappropriate use, take appropriate action and determine consequence. She or he may close an account or deny access at any time as required.
• NETWORK ETIQUETTE: The use of an account/access requires that you abide by accepted rules of network etiquette. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

I. BE RESPECTFUL. Do not send racist, sexist, or abusive messages to ANYONE.

II. USE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE. In all messages, do not swear or use vulgarities or any other inappropriate language. Anything pertaining to illegal activities is strictly forbidden. (Note that email is not guaranteed to be private. People who operate the system have access to all mail. Messages relating to illegal activities must be reported to appropriate authorities.)

III. PROTECT PRIVACY. Do not reveal the address or phone number of yourself or anyone else.

IV. SAFEGUARD CONNECTIVITY. Do not use the network in such a way that would disrupt the use of the network by others.

• SERVICES: EUSD will not be responsible for any damages you may suffer, including loss of data resulting from delays, non-deliveries, or service interruptions caused by our own negligence or your errors or omissions. Use of any information obtained via EUSD network services is at your own risk.
• SECURITY: Security on the EUSD network is important because it serves hundreds of members of our learning community. If you identify a security problem, notify the system administrator or another adult at once. Do not demonstrate the problem to other users. Never use another individual’s user ID or password. Attempts to login to the system as any other user may result in cancellation of user privileges.
• VANDALISM: Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data of another user on the EUSD network or any network connected to it. This includes, but is not limited to, uploading or creating computer viruses. Any vandalism will result in the loss of user privileges, disciplinary action, and legal referral.
• RULES: Computer lab rules will be posted in labs or classrooms to ensure computer areas are positive learning environments, and to protect equipment and the network. Students shall follow rules at all times. Violation of lab rules may result in the loss of user privileges, disciplinary action, and legal referral.
• SCOPE: These Terms and Conditions supersede all prior oral or written agreements. They shall be governed and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of California, U.S.A.

I have read, understand, and will abide by the Emery Unified School District Student Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). I understand that any violations of the AUP may result in disciplinary action, the loss of my user privileges, and appropriate legal action. All of the rules of conduct described in student and parent handbooks, as well as good common sense, apply when I am on the network.

I also know it is impossible for EUSD to block access to all controversial materials and that my child may view material that I consider inappropriate or offensive. I will not hold the District responsible for materials acquired on the network.
